CSX is driving innovation in locomotive technology at its Huntington Locomotive Shop, West Virginia, US, where craft-led teams are transitioning diesel engines to hydrogen-powered alternatives.
The Huntington team, which brings over a century of experience to locomotive construction and maintenance, is repurposing essential components such as cabs, frames, and traction motors. The reused parts extend the lifespan of the locomotives while supporting CSX's commitment to sustainability.
CSX unveiled its first hydrogen locomotive in 2024 as part of a collaboration with Kansas-based rail company CPKC. Hydrogen technology offers a cleaner alternative to diesel, emitting only water vapour and providing greater energy efficiency.
The Huntington Locomotive Shop is at the forefront of CSX’s efforts to push boundaries in rail technology while achieving its environmental goals.
