Hydrasun GmbH, a leading hydrogen solutions provider, has signed a contract with hydrogen supplier, FPS.Energy GmbH, to supply two HyQube 500 and one HyQube 850 refuelling systems to a public bus company in Brandenburg, Germany.
The project underlines the growing confidence among European public transport operators in hydrogen as an alternative to diesel, and the increasing demand for refuelling infrastructure to support the transition to zero emission vehicles.
The HyQube refuelling systems will be delivered through Hydrasun's subsidiary Fuel Cell Systems Ltd (FCSL), a hydrogen refuelling original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The three units will be operated by FPS in the towns of Spremberg and Guben, supporting a fleet of 35 fuel cell buses.
FPS.Energy will supply zero-emission, renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO)-certified green hydrogen by tube trailer to the two refuelling locations. Drawing on its substantial network of renewable hydrogen producers, it will ensure the reliable supply of compressed hydrogen to both sites. The refuellers will further compress the gas to 500 and 1000 bar into a total of five high-pressure storage bundles. Each bundle is capable of holding approximately 50kg of hydrogen, that will allow FPS to dispense using an efficient cascade refuelling. The refuelling system conforms to SAE J2601 protocol and is equipped with gas management panels and remote monitoring.
Leander Hoffmann, managing director at FPS.Energy, stated: “Our goal is to provide fleet operators in Germany with a complete hydrogen solution, from securing supply through, to designing and commissioning refuelling infrastructure. When evaluating technology partners for this project, Hydrasun and Fuel Cell Systems stood out for many reasons, not least for the simplicity of installation and deployment, as well as the depth of operational data it generates. Along with their remote support, that data helps us manage and maintain the deployment, and provides bus operators with valuable insights that can shape their hydrogen transition strategy. We are able to supply hydrogen to vehicles at both 350 and 700 bar dispenses.”
Mohammed Abu Abed, General Manager at Hydrasun Germany, commented: “As hydrogen adoption accelerates across Germany, building strong local content and working closely with partners like FPS.Energy is essential to delivering projects at scale. By combining local expertise with broader capabilities, we can support the rollout of hydrogen infrastructure effectively. Projects like this represent an important step forward for zero-emission public transport in Germany, while also strengthening the local economy and creating a blueprint for future bus fleet deployments across Europe.”
Tom Chicken, CEO at Fuel Cell Systems, said: “The HyQube 500 and 850 systems are fully standalone refuelling solutions with everything an operator needs to accept, compress, and dispense hydrogen, contained within a single, CE-certified package. This modular, factory-built system means fleet operators can start trialling their projects, efficiently scaling them as larger portions of their fleets transition. FPS is using our proven technology to pioneer clean, hydrogen-powered public transport, and we look forward to providing solutions to many more projects as hydrogen deployments advance across Germany.”
