GreenGo Energy A/S (GreenGo), a Danish renewable energy developer, and S.E.T. Select Energy GmbH and its affiliate Select New Energies GmbH (Select) a Hamburg-based global energy trading company, have announced a strategic partnership to co-develop and secure offtake to the groundbreaking ‘Megaton Moon’ Power-to-X (PtX) project in Mauritania.

Earlier in 2025, GreenGo Energy Group has signed its first African agreement with Mauritanian Authorities, marking a significant milestone in its mission to advance the global green hydrogen economy.

The Megaton Moon project is developed by GreenGo and is set to become one of the world’s largest green ammonia production facilities. Located 20 km south of Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania, the project will be powered entirely off grid by solar and wind energy. The project will utilise a seawater desalination plant and nitrogen from air extraction to produce green hydrogen, which will be synthesized into green ammonia. The facility is designed to support decarbonisation across key industries such as fertilizers, refineries, petrochemicals, transportation, and power generation.

Project highlights:

Phase 1:

  • Production of 355 000 tpy of green ammonia.
  • 500 MW electrolyser capacity powered by solar and wind energy.
  • Final Investment Decision (FID) targeted for 2028, with front-end engineering and design (FEED) completion expected by 2027.
  • Ready for production by 2031.

Phase 2:

  • Expansion to a total capacity of up to 1.7 million tpy.
  • Powered by over 2.5 GW of electrolyser capacity.

Phase 3:

  • Expansion to a total capacity of up to 4.0 million tpy.
  • Conditional to receiving additional land from the Authorities and market ramp-up.

This partnership marks a significant milestone in the global transition to sustainable energy and underscores the commitment of both GreenGo and Select to large scale, clean energy solutions. Location: Nouakchott, Mauritania, with product export planned via the Port of Nouakchott.

Government support: The project is strategically recognised by the Mauritanian government and benefits from favourable fiscal and tax conditions.

Select will act as offtake partner and co-developer of the Megaton Moon project, focusing on ammonia export facilities, leveraging its experience in global commodity trading and logistics. The company will manage the long-term marketing, offtake agreements, transshipment, and distribution of the green ammonia, and will explore financing options.

“We are thrilled to partner with Select on this transformative project,” said Karsten Nielsen CEO and Founder at GreenGo. “Megaton Moon represents a bold step toward global decarbonisation and Select's expertise in energy trading and logistics and market access will be instrumental in realising its full potential.”

“Green energy and energy security require global cooperation,” said Felix Danger, Managing Director of Select New Energies. “Mauritania’s exceptional renewable potential makes it an ideal hub for producing and exporting cost-efficient e-fuels, and we are proud to collaborate with GreenGo Energy on this important endeavour.”

The green ammonia produced will meet all European regulatory and technical standards.
