Simplifhy has designed, built, and installed an innovative power to power (P2P) cabinet for the Sicilian company Layer Electronics, which specialises in energy conversion.

This project represents an important step forward in the integration of hydrogen technologies in the industrial sector with a view to greater sustainability.

Part of a project engineered by DEREC Consulting, a company specialising in the integration of renewable sources, batteries, and hydrogen technologies, the P2P system integrates all the technologies needed to produce, store, and convert hydrogen into electricity into a single compact solution.

This solution fits perfectly into the energy transition strategy of Layer Electronics, a company founded in Erice in 1967 and now an international benchmark for industrial uninterruptible power supplies, frequency converters, voltage stabilisers, and many other energy conversion solutions.

The elements and technologies that make up the P2P system include:

Technical characteristics of the power to power system

The P2P cabinet developed by Simplifhy is an advanced technological solution that combines efficiency, compactness, and operational versatility. The system was developed to offer a complete cycle of hydrogen management as an energy carrier, from production to conversion into electricity.

Hydrogen production process

The heart of the system consists of two AEM electrolysers supplied by Enapter, Simplifhy'sGerman partner company that produces hydrogen generators using patented anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology. Specifically, these two electrolysers enable hydrogen to be produced from mains water and electricity through the process of electrolysis. This technology guarantees high energy conversion efficiency and high-quality hydrogen production, ideal for industrial applications.

Innovative storage system

One of the distinctive features of the P2P cabinet is the innovative metal hydride storage module developed by the Swiss company GRZ Technologies, founded in 2017 as a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). This solution allows hydrogen to be stored in solid form, offering significant advantages in terms of safety, efficiency, and ease of management.

Energy conversion with fuel cells

The system is completed by a fuel cell for converting stored hydrogen into electrical energy. This technology allows hydrogen to be used as an energy reserve, releasing electrical energy according to the customer’s operational needs and ensuring continuity of supply in localised industrial contexts.

Integrated water treatment

The cabinet also includes a water treatment system that guarantees the quality of the water used in the electrolysis process, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the electrolysers.

Simplifhy: innovation and sustainability for the industry of the future

Sergio Torriani, CEO of Simplifhy, commented: “The project with Layer Electronics confirms Simplifhy’s commitment to simplifying the adoption of hydrogen even in decentralised and highly specialiszed contexts. Combining industrial experience and clean technologies is not only possible today, but also necessary.”

The P2P cabinet installed at Layer Electronics, although currently designed as a demonstration solution, represents an innovative system capable of opening up new perspectives for the energy transition of the industrial sector.
