Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof) is developing the Hydrogen House project in Jyväskylä, Finland, to bridge the gap between hydrogen technology and its practical use in everyday life and to accelerate the commercialisation of hydrogen equipment, applications, and distribution through proof-of-concept testing. The Hydrogen House is a residential-type demonstration environment that combines hydrogen production, storage, electricity generation, heating, and everyday applications such as cooking into one integrated real-life setting.
The Hydrogen House is a unique initiative in Finland, with no directly comparable environment currently in operation elsewhere in the country.
The Hydrogen House provides a real-life testing platform where hydrogen-related technologies can be developed, validated, and demonstrated in an integrated setting, accelerating their transition from research and development into practical use. It enables the Foundation and its partners to carry out proof-of-concept validation in a realistic environment, supporting faster commercialisa;tion of hydrogen solutions. The project also places a strong emphasis on validating the safe use of hydrogen in everyday settings and increasing awareness of the role of hydrogen in future energy systems.
“The Hydrogen House allows us to accelerate the commercialisation of hydrogen solutions by validating them in a real-life environment. At the same time, we can demonstrate how hydrogen technologies can safely support everyday energy use and future off-grid solutions,” said Shun Kanazawa, Program Assistant Manager at Cefmof.
Advancing seasonal energy storage with hydrogen
Another key focus area is the development of a new approach to managing surplus renewable energy through hydrogen-based seasonal storage and testing off-grid energy solutions. The project integrates solar power, battery systems, and hydrogen technologies, including fuel cells and the utilisation of waste heat, into a hybrid energy management system.
This approach enables the storage of excess renewable energy and its later use in electricity generation, heating, and various end-use applications within the same environment. It also serves as a platform for developing and validating integrated off-grid energy solutions that combine renewable energy, storage, and hydrogen technologies within a single environment.

The Hydrogen House brings together a range of hydrogen technologies across the value chain, from production and storage to end-use applications. The environment includes solutions such as electrolysis, hydrogen storage systems, fuel cells, and hydrogen-based appliances.

Examples of planned applications include a hydrogen-powered oven designed to utilise water vapour generated during the hydrogen reaction process to improve cooking performance, enabling a crisp exterior while preserving moisture inside food products.
The project also utilises fuel cell technology to generate electricity from stored hydrogen during periods of low solar production, such as nighttime and winter conditions. By reusing waste heat from the fuel cell for facility heating, the system improves overall energy efficiency and supports effective utilisation of stored renewable energy.
The facility is intended as a real-life demonstration and validation environment that supports the development and commercialisation of hydrogen solutions before large-scale commercial deployment. The Hydrogen House is located in Jyväskylä, in an existing residential-type property environment that enables realistic testing conditions. The project’s construction phase is expected to be completed during summer 2026, after which development and testing activities will continue toward full operational capability.
