Edify will build and operate the 17.6 MW green hydrogen production plant on Thul Garrie Waja country within the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct, Northern Australia’s foremost eco-industrial precinct for advanced manufacturing, processing, technology and emerging industries in Townsville, Queensland. The green hydrogen facility powered by co-located solar photovoltaic and battery storage facility will initially produce 800 tpy of green hydrogen, building up to in excess of 150 000 tpy of production to service both domestic and export markets from the Port of Townsville.
Investment in Townsville’s green hydrogen hub will create new industries, boost local businesses and future-proof careers for the next generation. Project construction, scheduled to commence in 2025, will generate work for around 200 local skilled trades including concreters, plumbers, fitters, electricians and engineers.
Townsville is perfectly positioned to be Australia’s premier production and export hub of green hydrogen, with its abundance of renewable resources, electrical infrastructure (including the soon to be built CopperString line), the Port of Townsville and skilled workforce.
Edify Chief Executive, John Cole, said: “Being the successful applicant for the Townsville Hydrogen Hubs funding is incredibly exciting. It is testament to a lot of hard work and Edify’s track record in leading innovation in the renewable sector. We look forward to delivering our green hydrogen production facility, initially supplying our domestic customers and thereafter export markets from the Port of Townsville at a large scale, which is the end game."
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, said: “The whole world needs renewable hydrogen, and regional Australia is ready to provide it. With its port, expertise in exports and access to Queensland’s abundant solar resources, Townsville is ideally placed to help power the world with Australian renewable energy and create jobs in regional Australia.”
