For the first time, the transmission of domestically produced renewable e-methane has begun in Finland’s gas network. Gasgrid has issued Finland’s first guarantees of origin for renewable e-methane produced at the P2X Solutions plant.

The start of deliveries provides concrete proof that there is demand in Europe for synthetic fuels produced using renewable hydrogen, and that the hydrogen economy has moved from plans to reality. This is a significant milestone, as e-methane produced in Finland is now being delivered beyond the country’s borders to customers for the first time. Guarantees of origin issued for e-methane further enhance market transparency and reinforce Finland’s role as a producer of clean, renewable fuels, said Herkko Plit, CEO, P2X Solutions.

This marks a significant milestone in the renewable gas market, as there is demand for domestically produced renewable gases. The development of the renewable gas market requires both physical gas infrastructure and reliable commercial systems. The start of e-methane transmission on the network and the first guarantees of origin show that the renewable gas market is continuing to develop. In addition to the growing supply of biomethane, the market now offers e-methane produced from renewable hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide, commented Mika Myötyri, VP, gas market and customers, Gasgrid.

According to Myötyri, the start of e-methane transmission and the issuance of guarantees of origin for e-methane also lay the foundations for the hydrogen economy. Guarantees of origin are the only way to demonstrate to the market that the gas has been produced from renewable energy sources.

Guarantees of origin are needed for the sale of renewable gas

A guarantee of origin strengthens confidence in the market regarding the demonstration of the renewable origin of gases such as e-methane.

Without guarantees of origin, gas cannot be sold or marketed as renewable. Renewable gases play a significant role in achieving Finland and Europe’s carbon neutrality targets, said Heli Haapea from Gasgrid, who is developing the guarantees of origin system and the attribute market for renewable gases.

In Finland, the gas transmission company Gasgrid acts as the issuing body for renewable gases. Gasgrid is authorised to issue both national and European energy certificate system (EECS) guarantees of origin in Finland to production facilities for biomethane, e-methane, and hydrogen.

Finland at the forefront of developments in the renewable and low-carbon gas market

Gasgrid has been issuing guarantees of origin for biomethane for almost five years and hydrogen for around a year.

According to Haapea, Finland is at the forefront of developments among European countries in the issuing of guarantees of origin and in the markets for renewable and low-carbon gases. This also includes the development of commercial systems.

In Finland, the commercial system also allows guarantees of origin to be issued for new renewable gases, such as e-methane. This strengthens Finland’s position as a European front-runner in renewable gases.
