The system was upgraded from 3.1 MW in September 2026 and has supplied hydrogen to offtakers at up to 6.5 MW since 29 September.
The Måde facility has produced hydrogen with Stiesdal’s 3.1 MW electrolyser platform since 2023. The upgraded 6.5 MW system sits within the same plant. From the outside, the only visible addition is an extra converter cabinet. At nominal load, the facility can now produce up to 1270 Nm³/hr of hydrogen.
Higher capacity, improved project economics
The upgrade increases the hydrogen capacity available to the site’s existing offtakers. With power prices remaining a key driver of hydrogen production costs, the higher capacity allows the plant to produce more during periods of lower electricity prices.
The plant supplies a regular flow of hydrogen trailers to several offtakers with demand increasingly driven by Germany’s renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) hydrogen requirements following the implementation of RED III.
Built on proven technology
“Since we launched the 6.5 MW electrolyser, developers have asked us one question: is it running? Måde answers yes. The 6.5 MW unit is built on the 3.1 MW platform: proven technology, power-boosted, not reinvented. That is why it is delivering hydrogen to commercial customers five months after launch. The 6.5 MW platform significantly reduces deployment complexity per MW and brings system CAPEX down to around €500/kW,” said Esben Baltzer Nielsen, Head of Sales and Business Development at Stiesdal Hydrogen.
“Our experience working with Stiesdal made the step up to 6.5 MW an easy decision. The demand is there, but green hydrogen needs to be competitive. Higher capacity and flexible operation allow us to maximise production when electricity is cheap, which is key to making the economics work,” says Lars Dyrholm, Head of PtX Asset Management & Operations at European Energy.
Lower capital cost, more flexible operation
The 6.5 MW platform is priced at €3.15 - 3.3 million per system, depending on volume and delivery period. That is approximately half the European market average of around €1000/kW for similar scope, as benchmarked by the European Hydrogen Observatory.
Lower capital cost per kW means fewer operating hours are needed to recover the investment. With an operating range of 15 - 100% and a ramp-up rate of 2%/sec., the electrolyser can follow the cost of energy. At Måde, the electrolyser is directly connected to the adjacent wind turbines.
Manufactured in Europe
Stiesdal’s HydroGen electrolyser is manufactured in Europe, with an industrial supply chain designed for volume production.
