Construction begins for Japanese hydrogen facility

Kawasaki Heavy Industries has announced that it will commence construction of a hydrogen production facility using the steam methane reforming method ( SMR * 1 ) in the Kawasaki coastal area (Ogimachi, Kawasaki-ku, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture).
The facility is scheduled for completion around spring 2029 and will produce 18 tpd of high-purity hydrogen with a purity of 99.999% using city gas (13A) as a raw material, contributing to the expansion of hydrogen supply in Japan.
The hydrogen produced at this facility is being supplied via a high-pressure hydrogen pipeline* 3 to the Kawasaki LH2 Terminal (Ogishima, Kawasaki-ku, Kawasaki City), a liquefied hydrogen base in the "Commercialization Demonstration of Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain"*2 project being implemented by Japan Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd. (JSE) as part of the Green Innovation Fund ( GI Fund ) project of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization ( NEDO).
In constructing and operating this facility, the company will appropriately follow the necessary procedures based on relevant laws and regulations and Kawasaki City ordinances, thereby ensuring safety and security while harmonising with the local community. It also aims to underpin the domestic supply base of the hydrogen supply chain and become a driver in accelerating the development of the hydrogen industry.
