The MB Energy group has reached a further milestone in its commitment to invest in the development of a more sustainable hydrogen infrastructure: in addition to the recently inaugurated hydrogen refuelling station for heavy duty vehicles (HDVs) in Lübeck, the company has signed an agreement, effective 1 January 2026, to purchase a hydrogen refuelling station in Neumünster, Germany.

Designed for trucks, with a maximum capacity of up to 2000 kg of hydrogen refuelling per day, the station was inaugurated by Hypion in November 2023. With a convenient location in the Neumünster logistics hub, close to the A7 motorway, the automated hydrogen filling station is publicly accessible for refuelling both trucks and cars. It was the first 2-tons hydrogen refuelling station in Europe compliant with the EU’s Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which mandates hydrogen refuelling stations every 200 km along the Trans-European TEN-T corridors and at urban hubs by 2030.

The Neumünster station will be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure of the MB Energy group’s commercial road transport unit. The unit operates more than 400 conventional fuels stations and the new hydrogen refuelling site is, like these stations, operated within the tankpool24 network, which includes over 2000 fuelling locations across Europe and more than 750 in Germany.

“This hydrogen filling station marks a further step forward for us,” said Philipp Kroepels, Director of New Energy at MB Energy. “We are convinced that hydrogen will play a key role in the future energy supply, and we are proud to be making a tangible contribution to Germany’s hydrogen economy.”

“With the takeover of the Neumünster station, we are reinforcing our commitment to developing a reliable and scalable refuelling network for offering carbonless energy products for our customers”, commented Florian Lückmann, Director of Commercial Road Transport at MB Energy. “Hydrogen is a practical and promising energy carrier for long-haul transport, and this station is a great addition to our existing network of refuelling stations for commercial fleets and to our fuel card business, enabling us to offer a wider range of solutions to both existing and new customers.”

The MB Energy group continues to advance its multi-fuel strategy in commercial road transport by investing in hydrogen, biofuels, e-fuels, and charging to provide tailored solutions for its customers’ decarbonisation journeys. The takeover of the station in Neumünster comes in addition to the recently inaugurated hydrogen refuelling station in Lübeck. Furthermore, through its Swedish operations, the MB Energy group has already established two hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden and secured grants for additional sites.

“We are very pleased that we in MB Energy have found a partner committed to activating the market for zero-emission transportation of heavy-duty vehicles”, added Dr Stefan Rehm, Managing Director of Hypion. “With our concept of integrated H2-Hubs with production and distribution, and the usage of sustainable hydrogen for mobility, we are in the position to jointly contribute to clusters and finally the necessary network of stations for long-distance transportation.”

With now four hydrogen station fully operational, MB Energy underscores its ambition to enable future-oriented commercial transport solutions and accelerating the energy transition in the mobility sector.
