Worley to provide pre-FEED and technical survey services for the ECHP project

Worley is providing preliminary front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) and technical survey services for Cadent Gas as part of the East Coast Hydrogen Pipeline (ECHP) project in the UK.

The company is delivering a study for Cadent to understand how to transition natural gas supply into hydrogen and provide crucial information on the pipeline’s potential route and sizing. This will be followed with a pre-FEED study for the project.

The project, led by East Coast Hydrogen (ECH2), will connect 10 GW of hydrogen production from Humber and Teesside industrial hubs to the gas network. With this project, Cadent aims to connect hydrogen supplies between Humberside and Northampton, England, potentially creating a 240 km network that will address the UK’s future decarbonised energy demands.

ECH2 comprises a collaborative partnership with Cadent, Northern Gas Networks and National Gas Transmission. The project aims to support the UK Government’s plans to meet its 2050 net zero targets.

If completed, the project is set to convert up to 39 000 businesses and over 4 million homes to hydrogen over a 15-year timescale. It is also estimated to create tens of thousands of jobs in the future hydrogen economy.

“This is a major milestone not only in the first stage of design but also puts down another marker in Cadent’s ambitions and efforts to transition the gas grid from natural gas to low-carbon hydrogen. We look forward to starting this journey with Worley, who shares our vision and strives for a sustainable energy future,” says Adam Knight, Project Director at ECHP.

“This project represents an unmissable opportunity for collaboration between the government and the private sector to deliver on the UK’s bold decarbonisation targets. As we focus on our purpose of delivering a more sustainable world,” adds Chris Gill, Senior Vice President, Low-Carbon Hydrogen.
