Atlas Copco Gas and Process has secured an order from Plug Power Inc., a leading provider of turnkey solutions for the global green hydrogen economy, to provide compressors and expanders for two 15 tpd hydrogen liquefaction plants to be built in Texas, USA. The scope of the order includes two nitrogen compressors, four nitrogen turboexpanders, and four hydrogen turboexpanders, expected to be delivered in 2Q23. The turbo compressors will be manufactured at Atlas Copco Comptec in Voorheesville, New York, while the turboexpander units will be manufactured at Atlas Copco Mafi-Trench in Santa Maria, California.

This is the first order resulting from the strategic collaboration that Plug Power and Atlas Copco Gas and Process entered jointly in February 2022. This agreement enables knowledge and technology sharing between the two companies, allowing both entities to continually refine liquefaction process technology to increase plant output and lower the cost of hydrogen liquefaction. As part of this collaboration, Plug Power is also offering complete hydrogen liquefaction solutions to EPCs and other interested third parties.

Robert Radimeczky, President of Atlas Copco Gas and Process said: “We are pleased to supply Plug Power with our equipment as they make significant steps towards scaling their hydrogen production and liquefaction capability and liquefaction plant offerings. By making hydrogen more affordable, more industries can increase hydrogen utilisation in their processes. We see these two liquefaction plants as important steps in both organisations’ commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050”

Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power added: “We strongly value our strategic collaboration with Atlas Copco Gas and Process, and together with their deep technical and manufacturing expertise, we are pleased to be jointly expanding our hydrogen liquefaction network. We look forward to continuing to work together to build out the green hydrogen economy, and help more customers fully decarbonise operations to achieve their sustainability goals.”
