Global Hydrogen Review,

Air Products has announced a significant construction milestone on its new liquid hydrogen facility in the Port of Rotterdam. The facility, now at an advanced stage of construction and over 65% complete, reflects a major step in reinforcing and modernising Air Products current hydrogen footprint in the Netherlands.

It will strengthen reliable supply for customers across a wide range of existing and emerging industries.

Significantly expanding Air Products’ liquid hydrogen product availability, the new liquefier will be the largest liquid hydrogen production facility in Europe when it becomes operational in 2027. It will strengthen the company’s liquid hydrogen capabilities in the region and integrate seamlessly with its long standing hydrogen distribution infrastructure, reinforcing its well established, strategic position within the Rotterdam industrial cluster.

Designed around customer demand

Air Products’ liquid hydrogen customers span multiple new and emerging sectors, including electronics manufacturing, space applications, industrial processing, and emerging energy. These markets require reliable supply, proven logistics and infrastructure to operate competitively and meet evolving regulatory requirements.

The new liquefier will be supplied through Air Products integrated hydrogen network in the region, including production from its multiple hydrogen sources in the industrial cluster, serving customers’ existing and evolving hydrogen demand. Liquid hydrogen can be transported efficiently over long distances, and Air Products expects the new facility to offer additional supply alternatives for customers across the Benelux region, France, Germany, and the UK.

“Customers depend on hydrogen availability and reliability to run their operations every day," said Miquel Lope, vice president of Northern Continent, Air Products. “The continued progress of our new Rotterdam liquefier reflects ongoing investment in supply reliability in the region. Our commitment is to providing customers with a modern, resilient hydrogen supply platform they can rely on as their needs continue to grow.”

Reinforcing Rotterdam’s position as Europe’s hydrogen gateway

The new liquid hydrogen facility further strengthens Rotterdam’s position as one of Europe’s key hydrogen and energy hubs, supported by government policy, existing infrastructure, logistics and industrial demand.

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, added: “As Europe’s largest port and a key energy hub, Rotterdam is committed to enabling Europe’s developing hydrogen economy. Air Products’ investment strengthens the infrastructure required for industrial decarbonisation and ensures reliable, locally available supply for businesses across the region.”
