Nikkiso to support hydrogen fuelling station

Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group has announced that it has been contracted by Clean Energy Fuels Corp (Clean Energy) to provide equipment and control systems for an upcoming liquid hydrogen station for Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) in California. The station is expected to be operational by Summer 2026.

Clean Energy was awarded the contract to design and construct a new hydrogen fuelling station for RTA, and selected Nikkiso CE&IG to supply the required pumps and vaporisers, as well as the priority panel, dispensers, and controls and safety system.

Nikkiso CE&IG will also supply a boil-off gas compressor and a liquid hydrogen offload pump designed to mitigate boil-off gas — one of the most problematic, market-limiting and significant technical challenges faced in the transportation and handling of liquid hydrogen.

Construction of the purpose-built station in Riverside enables RTA’s newly-purchased 40-ft hydrogen fuel cell buses and marks the beginning of its transition to a low-carbon, zero emissions fleet. RTA will eventually grow the hydrogen-fuel-cell fleet to more than 100 vehicles over the next decade, and the station’s 24/7 operation is critical to meeting that goal.

Work on the Riverside station comes after Nikkiso CE&IG’s announcement earlier in 2025 that it would build a hybrid hydrogen trailer and fuelling station designed to reduce boil-off gas losses close to zero in Long Beach on behalf of WestAir.

Mike Mackey, President of Fuelling Solutions at Nikkiso CE&IG, said: “Nikkiso has been building lower-carbon, alternative fuelling stations for transit in California since 1998 – beginning with natural gas and adding hydrogen in 2021. We are one of the first and few companies with the cryogenics expertise to manage the volume of liquid hydrogen needed to power full fleets of buses.
