Air Products signs hydrogen agreement with RWE

Air Products has announced that it has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with RWE to secure renewable electricity for its existing hydrogen operations and new liquid hydrogen facility being built in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
The agreement will provide up to 75 GWh of renewable electricity annually. The electricity is supplied from the Karolinapolder onshore wind farm (located along the Volkerak near Dinteloord) and the Kerkrade solar farm (located in the province of Limburg).
Renewable energy for liquid hydrogen production
In addition to the long standing hydrogen system, the renewable energy will power Air Products' new liquid hydrogen facility. Significantly expanding Air Products’ existing liquid hydrogen product availability, the new liquefier will be the largest liquid hydrogen production facility in Europe when it becomes operational in 2027. The PPA will support Air Products’ ability to produce hydrogen that meets the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) criteria for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) hydrogen.

As demand for RFNBO-compliant hydrogen grows across Europe, Air Products is investing to give customers the confidence to plan, procure and decarbonise at scale.”

RWE develops, builds and operates wind and solar assets to provide long term, low carbon electricity to industrial partners and support the decarbonisation of key sectors.
The PPA is consistent with Air Products’ approach to accelerate the adoption of clean hydrogen in Europe. Air Products’ liquid hydrogen customers span multiple new and emerging sectors, including electronics manufacturing, space applications, industrial processing, transport and emerging energy.
