On 16 January 2026, Bosch and LINZ AG signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint research and development of innovative hydrogen solutions. The goal of this strategic partnership is to advance the decarbonisation of the energy supply and to sustainably strengthen the regional hydrogen economy in Linz, Austria.

The signing took place at a ceremony in Linz attended by high-ranking representatives from business and politics, including Provincial Councillor Markus Achleitner and Linz Mayor Dietmar Prammer. The partnership underscores the importance of green hydrogen for Upper Austria as a business and energy hub.

The focus of this exploratory collaboration is the efficient utilisation and processing of the hydrogen produced in the electrolysis test field at the Bosch Engineering Center Linz. LINZ AG is examining the integration of this hydrogen source into the emerging Linz hydrogen start-up network via a new 100% hydrogen pipeline to distribute the hydrogen efficiently and safely to initial potential customers. Furthermore, Bosch and LINZ AG are exploring options for the construction of additional electrolysis plants and potential optimisation through shared infrastructure use. Another focus is on testing grid-supportive operation to stabilise the electricity grid and ensure the efficient use of renewable energies. Research partners will also be involved to provide scientific support for technical, economic, and environmental aspects.

"With its electrolysis test field, the Bosch Engineering Center Linz offers ideal conditions for transferring hydrogen technologies from test operations to real-world applications," said Christian Ganser, Head of the Bosch Engineering Center Linz. "The collaboration with Linz AG enables us to meaningfully link research, infrastructure and regional use, and to further develop hydrogen solutions in a practical way."

“This partnership sends a strong signal for the future of energy supply in our region,” explained Helmut Weinwurm, Chairman of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch AG. “Together with LINZ AG, we want to strategically apply our expertise in hydrogen technologies to develop concrete and sustainable solutions for Linz.”

Dr Thomas Pauer, Chairman of the Powertrain Solutions division at Bosch and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Robert Bosch AG, added: “Green hydrogen is a key energy carrier and raw material of the future. This collaboration allows us to ideally combine technological expertise and regional implementation, and to develop innovative applications for the Linz site.”

“As an innovative utility company, we see hydrogen as a key to a future-proof energy infrastructure,” said Erich Haider, MBA, CEO of LINZ AG. “The cooperation with Bosch gives us early access to leading technology and a potential hydrogen source. In doing so, we are making an active contribution to the transformation of the energy system in our region.”
