CarlHYng hydrogen project receives funding

Located in the municipality of Carling (Moselle, France), the CarlHYng project plans for a gradual scale-up of the installed electrolysis capacity, with the secured implementation site able to accommodate up to 300 MW. The first phase of the project, with a capacity of 70 MW, is scheduled to be commissioned by end of 2029. It will enable the production of up to 10 000 tpy of hydrogen, including 6000 t of renewable hydrogen (RFNBO), which will be supplied under a long-term agreement signed in July 2025 to the German steelmaker Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS). These volumes will be transported to the Dillingen site through the cross-border mosaHYc pipeline network operated by NaTran and Creos, which runs across the CarlHYng project site.

In April 2024, the CarlHYng project was granted Project of Common Interest status, recognising its key role in strengthening Franco-German cross-border energy cooperation and, more broadly, in enhancing the integration and flexibility of the European energy market. In this context, the grant from CEF Energy amounting to €4.2 million, after careful assessment of the project development plan by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), will support the costs of the final technical studies required for the execution of Phase 1 of the project.

After signing a hydrogen purchase agreement for 6000 tpy of RFNBO hydrogen over 10 years with SHS in July 2025, this selection marks another important step forward for the CarlHYng project.
