Global Hydrogen Review,
The hydrogen facility of the food retailer MPREIS in Völs, Tyrol, Austria, is set to change ownership: following intensive and successful negotiations, Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH is fully acquiring the electrolysis plant, including the associated hydrogen refuelling station, trailer filling system, and the local hydrogen expert team.
“This acquisition marks another significant step for the Tyczka Group in the production of green hydrogen,” said Dr Frank Götzelmann, CEO of the Tyczka Group. With this move, Tyczka Hydrogen continues to expand its cross-border network and improves the supply situation for green hydrogen in southern Germany, Austria, and northern Italy.
Long-standing partnership – developed for the future
The acquisition is the result of a long-standing, trust-based partnership in hydrogen production and marketing between the two family-owned companies. Both are deeply rooted in their respective regions and share the same goal: making a sustainable contribution to the energy transition.
In recent years, MPREIS has been a pioneer in hydrogen at the Völs site. Tyczka Hydrogen will now carry this vision forward and initiate the next development steps. The entire expert team of MPREIS Hydrogen GmbH will be taken over, ensuring uninterrupted operation of the facility. Both companies have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
Thomas Zorn, Managing Director of Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH, commented: “With this acquisition, we are reaching another milestone in our business development: We are investing strategically in expanding an independent and reliable hydrogen supply. Together with the site team and our partners, we will further develop and strategically expand our hydrogen activities – especially towards Austria and northern Italy.”
David Mölk, member of the MPREIS management board, added: “With our hydrogen project, we took on a pioneering role in western Austria and brought the country’s first hydrogen truck onto the road. For the further development of this promising technology, we have found a strong partner in Tyczka Hydrogen.”
Efficient hydrogen production and refuelling
The heart of the facility is an alkaline pressure electrolysis system from Sunfire, serving as a robust backbone for green hydrogen production. The hydrogen refuelling station, also part of the acquisition, remains a key supply component – including for MPREIS logistics, which will continue to be reliably supplied with hydrogen at the site. The station is equipped with technology and offers hydrogen at a pressure level of 350 bar, making it suitable for various commercial vehicles and buses. Hydrogen will also continue to be used as an emission-free energy source in the Therese Mölk bakery.
Strategic expansion of hydrogen infrastructure
Tyczka Hydrogen is already a shareholder in Hy2B Wasserstoff GmbH with its electrolysis plant in Pfeffenhausen, Bavaria. Additionally, a new hydrogen hub is currently being developed in Schweinfurt, Bavaria, which will include an electrolysis plant, trailer filling centre, and hydrogen refuelling station. With the completed acquisition and the ongoing expansion of these sites, a powerful, regionally anchored production network for green hydrogen is emerging – with the clear goal of further increasing supply security and ensuring long-term cross-border mobility solutions.
