Global Hydrogen Review,
The Hydrogen Taskforce welcomes the publication of the Net Zero Strategy, Heat and Buildings Strategy and announcement on sequencing of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) clusters. Taken together, these publications set out the role for hydrogen as part of a low carbon energy mix, and further details on the road to scaling up production and deployment of hydrogen.
Clare Jackson, co-lead on the Hydrogen Taskforce Secretariat and Head of Innovation - Low Carbon at Gemserv, said:
“Setting a clear path to net-zero by 2050 is vital, and we are therefore pleased to see the Government’s Net Zero Strategy. We welcome the recognition in the strategy that hydrogen will play an essential role in a low carbon future for key sectors like transport and industry under any scenario. The definition of a clear plan to deliver net-zero will also allow for progress to be measured and will make it easier to change course if we are off track to meet our net-zero objectives.
“The Heat and Buildings Strategy marks a welcome commitment to reducing emissions in UK homes, exemplified by the government’s new target for all new heating systems installed in UK homes by 2035 to be low carbon. We note the Government will make a decision on hydrogen’s role on this in 2026, following the Hydrogen Village pilot, and share the view that ultimately the UK will new a range of low carbon heating technologies, including hydrogen.”
Commenting on the CCS cluster sequencing announcement, Clare Jackson added:
“It is good to see the Government taking decisions needed to support the development of CCS in the UK, which will be vital for development of low carbon hydrogen. However, we believe there is potential to accelerate development of this vital technology still further and encourage the Government to engage with the full range of clusters to support rapid development of the CCS sector.”
These announcements follow the publication of the Hydrogen Strategy in August 2021, which committed the Government to a target of 5 GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, and which has been backed with £240 million of investment to date.
