Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases Group (Nikkiso CE&IG) has announced a new solution to high boil-off gas rates at hydrogen fuelling stations with the launch of a next-generation reciprocating pump.
Building on the success of Nikkiso CE&IG’s P2K pump, tests have demonstrated the capability of the P2KHF pump to pressurise and transfer liquid hydrogen with losses of less than 1%, making it ideal as either a boost pump or a standalone subcooled liquid hydrogen refuelling pump.
High boil-off gas rates are an ongoing challenge for hydrogen fuelling stations, with loss rates of 20 - 30% common in the industry. One major stage where losses occur is on the pump discharge line, but by using the P2KHF, pump-related liquid hydrogen losses are expected to be cut by seven times more than other solutions, amounting to up to US$150 000 in hydrogen saved per pump per year.
When it comes to vehicle fuelling operations, the single-stage reciprocating pump design has replaced the complexity of traditional multi-stage centrifugal designs. By simplifying this design, the pump delivery time can be shortened by months as well as cutting the cooldown time by more than half of the industry average, saving up to 38.5kg of hydrogen per cooldown.
Emile Bado, President of Nikkiso CE&IG’s Cryogenic Pumps and Expanders Business Unit, stated: “High boil-off rates have long been a challenge for hydrogen fuelling station operators, and our team has been working tirelessly to find a solution to one of the industry’s biggest hurdles. The P2KHF uniquely positions itself as the solution to customer pain points with its capability to retrofit into existing Nikkiso stations, while serving as the foundation for next-generation H70 and subcooled liquid hydrogen fuel infrastructure.”
