GravitHy selects Danieli for hydrogen-based iron project

Working to accelerate the transformation of the steel industry value chain by providing steelmakers with low-carbon iron for the production of greener steel, GravitHy has contracted Danieli to supply an Energiron Zero reformer DR plant to produce 2 million tpy of HBI by using hydrogen and an electric power heater.

The new, green DR GravitHy plant will use low-carbon hydrogen produced on-site by GravitHy and will produce HBI to be used in electric steelmaking, with a metalisation capacity up to 96%, and a carbon content of 1% – which is needed during the steel melting process.

GravitHy’s total project investment exceeds €3 billion and Danieli has received the notice to proceed for the initial basic engineering phase related to its portion.

The Danieli supply scope includes the Energiron plant designed for hydrogen use - a technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, as well as an electric process for gas heating - the latest technology to further reduce carbon footprint; water-treatment and material handling components.

The new plant is expected to start operations by end 2030 and will be located in the industrial port area of Fos-sur-Mer, France, adjacent to the new Mistral minimill project of Marcegaglia, which will produce hot-rolled coil via electric steelmaking (a Danieli ongoing project).
