Pajarito Powder, a materials technology company that specialises in catalysts for electrolysers and fuel cells, has invested in advanced manufacturing equipment to produce 20 kg batches of its proprietary fuel cell support material.

Previously, the company produced 5 kg batches of their ‘engineered catalyst support’ in a laboratory-type production space. With the installation of a new ball mill and large furnace in a separate location, the company can now produce up to hundreds of kilograms per year.

“These enhancements in production capacity boost Pajarito Powder’s position as integral supplier to major hydrogen fuel cell producers. The new equipment will allow Pajarito Powder to support the requests of a major automotive customer,” said Christian Mohrdieck, CEO, Pajarito Powder.

The larger batches will be manufactured in a 2500 m2 (27 000 ft2) facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. The building has high ceilings to accommodate upgrades and tall manufacturing equipment.

Pajarito Powder produces three distinct products:
  • Engineered catalyst supports (ECSTM), the focus of the manufacturing scale-up effort and the basis from which fuel cell catalysts are made. Serving as the foundation, ECS provides a more rigorous platform upon which to build high-performing catalysts.
  • Complete platinum group metals (PGM) catalyst solutions on Pajarito Powder’s proprietary ECS.
  • Electrolyser catalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser applications, with oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts.
