UL Solutions has issued its first certification of an industrial hydrogen generator to Ohmium International, a company specialising in proton exchange membrane electrolysers for hydrogen generation, supporting energy transition safety.

UL Solutions evaluated Ohmium’s proton exchange membrane electrolyser module and system, models LCC, LWC, LHC, LPC, LTC and UIB, according to UL 2264A, the Outline of Investigation for Water Electrolysis Type Hydrogen Generators. A UL Outline of Investigation (OOI) is a UL Solutions document that establishes requirements for evaluating and certifying the safety of a product or system. UL 2264A, addressing water electrolysis-type hydrogen generators, identifies relevant codes and standards to address risk management, and it defines the construction and performance testing requirements associated with factors such as electrical, pressure, leakage and protection of service personnel.

“The global focus on sustainability is driving technological advancements and energy infrastructure investments to decarbonise the economy. Hydrogen energy is a promising alternative, particularly for transportation and power generation,” said Kenneth Boyce, Vice President of Principal Engineering in the Industrial Testing, Inspection and Certification group at UL Solutions. “UL Solutions developed the UL 2264A Outline of Investigation — the first of its kind enabling safer hydrogen solutions — to support manufacturers such as Ohmium International in bringing innovative and safer new energy technologies to the market.”

Many driving factors, including a focus on the energy transition, the evolution of the hydrogen economy and a heightened societal demand for decarbonisation, have resulted in new regulations and government support for the research and development of new hydrogen technologies. UL Solutions remains at the forefront of elevating safety in these emerging technologies, including supporting hydrogen energy with UL 2264A.

“Ohmium is proud to achieve the first UL certification of a hydrogen generator to UL 2264A — it is a concrete affirmation of our commitment to safety, reliability and operational excellence,” said Arne Ballantine, Ohmium CEO. “Our proton exchange membrane electrolysers seamlessly match the fluctuations of solar and wind energy. This UL certification is an important milestone, making it even easier for our customers to transition to green hydrogen quickly, easily and cost-effectively.”

With hydrogen playing a critical role in the transition to low-carbon transportation and energy systems, UL Solutions continues to strengthen its position in the hydrogen industry. The recent acquisition of the Germany-based hydrogen component and system testing company TesTneT Engineering GmbH enables the company to help advance the adoption of hydrogen-powered technologies globally.
