AI supports green hydrogen hub

Stuttgart's municipal utility company (SWS) and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) are cooperating in the joint project "SCH2EDULIZER". The partners are jointly developing an AI-supported software solution that will optimise the operation of the four electrolysers at the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart (GH2S).

Software optimises hydrogen production at the hub

“This joint project represents a further development stage for our innovative hydrogen project at the Port of Stuttgart. It allows us to utilise renewable resources particularly efficiently in ongoing hydrogen production and to respond to dynamic market fluctuations – without neglecting regulatory requirements,” said Jannik Eversmann, sub-project manager at Stuttgart's municipal utility company.

Jonas Petzschmann, deputy head of the Modules, Systems, and Applications department and team leader for Smart Grids & Network Integration at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart, added: “Green hydrogen becomes more economical not only through improved technology, but also through intelligent operation. SCH2EDULIZER ensures that the electrolyser, battery storage, and electricity markets interact optimally.” The two-year collaborative project is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs through the Invest BW program.

This innovative software application utilises advanced optimisation methods for electrolyzers and battery storage systems. It takes into account current energy market mechanisms. This ensures that high-purity green hydrogen is produced precisely when renewable electricity is particularly inexpensive on the energy market. Battery storage systems dynamically feed electricity into the production process when market prices are higher or when additional operational capacity is required.

The AI-powered software ensures optimal electrolyser operation by considering fluctuating markets, volatile generation, and regulatory requirements for electricity from renewable sources.

Stuttgart's municipal utility company, Stadtwerke Stuttgart, is responsible for the implementation and testing of the software at the Green Hydrogen Hub in the Port of Stuttgart, acting as a practical partner. ZSW contributes its methodological expertise in energy system modeling, optimization under uncertainty, and machine learning, and is taking the lead in developing the optimisation models.
