Global Hydrogen Review,
In line with the Hon'ble Prime Minister's call to reduce fuel consumption and promote the use of public transport and reinforcing its commitment towards advancing India's green mobility mission and clean energy transition, Indian Oil Corporation Limited under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs has launched hydrogen-powered shuttle bus services in Delhi's Central Vista area.
The hydrogen-powered buses were formally flagged off today by Mr. Arvind Kumar, Director (Refineries), IndianOil and Dr. Amit Kumar Jain, Director (Operations), DMRC, marking a significant step towards adoption of sustainable and zero-emission public transportation solutions in the national capital.
Under this pioneering initiative, IndianOil has deployed two state-of-the-art hydrogen-fuelled buses to provide seamless and environment-friendly last-mile connectivity between Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth Metro stations and key government establishments in the Central Vista region.
The buses, each with a seating capacity of 35 passengers, are equipped with modern passenger safety and monitoring systems including GPS-based tracking and CCTV surveillance. The shuttle service will operate on all working days during peak office hours, encouraging greater use of public transport while helping reduce vehicular emissions and dependence on conventional fossil fuels. In comparison to conventional fuels, Hydrogen is more environment-friendly, as the only emission is water.
The route will cover important government offices and landmarks including Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Akbar Road, Baroda House, National Stadium, National Gallery of Modern Art, India Gate and Seva Teerth Metro Station.
As part of the operational arrangement, DMRC will oversee bus operations, ticketing, conductors and passenger facilitation, while IndianOil will provide hydrogen fuel support and trained drivers for the buses.
IndianOil has been spearheading India’s hydrogen mobility initiatives through deployment of hydrogen fuel cell buses, establishment of a green hydrogen plant at Panipat and investments in future-ready clean energy infrastructure. The company has already undertaken multiple initiatives to promote green hydrogen as a clean and sustainable fuel for mobility applications.
The launch of hydrogen-powered shuttle buses in the Central Vista region reflects IndianOil’s continued commitment towards enabling low-carbon mobility solutions and supporting the Government of India’s vision for sustainable urban transportation and net zero aspirations.
