Global Hydrogen Review,
As part of the HYGUANE project, launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2023, HYmpulsion and Hyliko are combining their expertise to support the deployment of hydrogen mobility. The HYGUANE project is based on the implementation of a complete hydrogen ecosystem, combining local green hydrogen production, distribution infrastructure and fuel cell vehicles.
This integrated approach will support both the logistics needs associated with space activities and the decarbonisation of road transport in French Guiana.
A hydrogen-powered vehicle tailored to local needs
As part of the project, Hyliko, the first provider of integrated hydrogen solutions dedicated to road freight transport, is making a retrofitted Hy T44 4×2 FCEV tractor unit available to MT Aerospace.
With a range of up to 500 kilometres, the vehicle is designed to meet the logistics needs of the Guiana Space Centre as well as those of local transport operators.
Designed for a wide range of applications, the vehicle will notably be capable of carrying out up to two daily rotations transporting shipping containers between Kourou and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, or up to four daily rotations delivering skip containers to construction sites across the region.
“The HYGUANE project demonstrates that hydrogen is already a concrete solution to address the decarbonisation challenges of heavy-duty transport, including in regions facing significant logistical constraints. We are proud to support this initiative alongside leading partners and to demonstrate our vehicles’ ability to meet demanding operational requirements,” said Ovarith Troeung, Chief Executive Officer of Hyliko.
Trials conducted within the HYmpulsion network
Currently undergoing testing in France, the vehicle is continuing its operational validation programme before being deployed as part of the HYGUANE project.
As part of this process, a refuelling operation will be carried out at the Lyon-Saint-Exupéry hydrogen station operated by HYmpulsion.
Located at the heart of the Lyon-Saint-Exupéry mobility hub, this station is part of the network developed by HYmpulsion as part of the Zero Emission Valley (ZEV) programme, one of the largest European projects dedicated to the deployment of hydrogen mobility. It illustrates the central role of refueling infrastructure in the emergence of an efficient and fully operational hydrogen sector.
Continuing Collaboration in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Beyond the HYGUANE project, HYmpulsion and Hyliko are continuing their collaboration to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen mobility for road freight transport.
In July and September 2026, Hyliko will conduct a testing campaign for its Hy T44 hydrogen tractor unit in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. These trials will be carried out under real operating conditions around HYmpulsion's refueling stations to evaluate the vehicle's operational performance and demonstrate the maturity of hydrogen solutions for freight transport operators. By combining vehicles and infrastructure within a single ecosystem, HYmpulsion and Hyliko are helping to remove barriers to hydrogen adoption and accelerate the transition towards decarbonised road transport.
