Global Hydrogen Review,

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company Inc. has entered into an MoU with Australia-based Gold Hydrogen Ltd to jointly assess the feasibility of green methanol production on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.

Gold Hydrogen is advancing the Ramsay Project, which aims to pursue the commercial extraction of natural hydrogen and helium resources discovered underground in South Australia. With a view to the future commercialisation of natural hydrogen and helium development project and the potential expansion into a green methanol business utilising natural hydrogen, MGC has made an equity investment in gold hydrogen.

Under this MoU, both companies will aim to conduct a stepwise feasibility assessment for green methanol production, with natural hydrogen expected to be supplied from Gold Hydrogen’s project on the Yorke Peninsula as the core feedstock while utilising regional resources and infrastructure such as renewable power, and, in line with the progress of the production test at Gold Hydrogen’s natural hydrogen exploration well scheduled to commence in late June, plan to launch a preliminary feasibility study in the second half of 2026.

MGC is promoting CarbopathTM, an environmentally circular platform designed to realise a methanol-based carbon cycle by producing methanol from multiple sources such as captured CO2, waste plastics, and biomass, and supplying it for use as fuels, materials, and chemical products. Through collaboration with Gold Hydrogen, MGC aims to realise the supply of green methanol using natural hydrogen, which has the potential to enable zero emissions, thereby accelerating the adoption of environmentally circular methanol across the methanol value chain and contributing to the realisation of a sustainable society.
